BLACK LIVES MATTER SUES LOS ANGELES FOR GEORGE FLOYD PROTESTS
GEORGE FLOYD PROTEST SETTLEMENT IN SANTA MONICA
Notice: A notice of conditional settlement has been filed with the federal court in Los Angeles in the case of Black Lives Matter v. City of Santa Monica. The case involves the protests in response to the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020.
If you were arrested or detained by law enforcement in the City of Santa Monica and issued a citation by the Santa Monica Police Department on May 31 or June 1, 2020 you may be a member of the arrest/detention class and eligible to submit a claim for damages. The terms of the settlement will be filed with the Court shortly and, once the Court gives preliminary approval, notices of the settlement and claim forms will be mailed to every qualified individual who submits an intake. When the Court gives preliminary approval to the settlement, the Court will set deadlines for filing claims and a hearing on final approval. Once a claim form is submitted, it will be reviewed to see if you meet the criteria to participate in the settlement.
Updates and claim forms will also be available on the website protestslosangeles.com. If you have any questions, please use the contact phone and email listed on the website and below.
Please note that the use of force class was dismissed by the parties before this settlement on arrest conditions was reached. If you were injured by use of “rubber bullets” or batons during the Floyd protests in Santa Monica and you believe the Santa Monica Police Department was responsible, you have until late June to file an individual lawsuit. If you think you may have a claim for the unlawful use of force, you are urged to consult an attorney right away.
